Overview
Keaney Park is one of more than 30 parks in the City of Lynn, MA. Because of a significant investment made possible by the City’s American Rescue Plan Act, the City of Lynn was able to upgrade the playground here, which now includes PlayBound Poured-In-Place surfacing.
Key Challenges and Solutions
A serene 16.4-acre park that offers diverse terrains for exploring and caters to walkers, hikers, and runners, Keaney Park also provides an opportunity to see wildlife, including birds, squirrels, rabbits, and deer. In addition to offering fields and courts for various sports, Keaney Park also features a new playground.
When the existing playground was renovated, the city wanted it to include accessibility improvements, so wheelchairs and strollers could gain access to the park. As such, the City of Lynn selected 5,655-square-feet of PlayBound Poured-In-Place surfacing. This product is ADA compliant per ASTM F-1951 for playground surface accessibility.
PlayBound was installed by Playsafe Surfacing and features a 2-layer system, comprised of a basemat made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and polyurethane and a top surface consisting of recycled post-industrial Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber or TPV Granule and aromatic or aliphatic urethane binder. Surface America uses an industry-leading percentage of material in its top surface, significantly increasing the surface’s expected life. PlayBound is also IPEMA certified to meet critical fall heights up to 13 feet per ASTM F-1292; so, if a child falls off a piece of equipment, they are protected.
Because the rubber and urethane components in PlayBound are mixed and applied on site, colors, logos, games, or geometric shapes can be permanently incorporated into the surface. The Keaney Park playground was designed using three different color mixes and features a trail and arrow design.
M.E. O’Brien & Sons Inc. and Landscape Structures Inc. supplied the playground equipment. In addition to accessibility, the City of Lynn selected PlayBound Poured-In-Place surfacing, because of Surface America’s quality standards and installation capacity.
