Overview

The 610-acre Mississippi Gateway Regional Park in Brooklyn Park, MN., has something for everyone and features a range of amenities and activities along the scenic Mississippi River. After a major renovation, the Hillside Play Area now features PlayBound™ Poured-in-Place surfacing in neutral colors to preserve the natural beauty of the landscape.

Key Challenges and Solutions

Formerly known as Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, the Mississippi Gateway Regional Park renovation focused on education, recreation, and community gatherings. The Gateway Center serves as the destination for outdoor exploration and adventure, while the Treetop Trail, an elevated walkway over wetlands, leads parkgoers to nature-based play areas.

One of these playgrounds is the Hillside Play Area. Located off the Treetop Trail in the eastern part of the park, the Hillside Play Area includes slides, climbing rocks, nature play elements, and 421-square-feet of PlayBound Poured-in-Place surfacing. An important component of the park renovation was to offer an accessible play area for everyone to enjoy, no matter what their age or ability. The PlayBound safety surfacing here provides that and was designed using natural colors with the Treetop Trail weaving through play equipment.

PlayBound is a 2-layer system consisting of a basemat comprised of 100 percent post-consumer recycled SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) and polyurethane and a top surface consisting of recycled post-industrial EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber or TPV granule and aromatic or aliphatic urethane binder. The surface thickness can be modified on site to meet varying critical fall heights, and the system works so well it comes with a 7-year warranty.

Surface America was selected for this project, because of its high-quality standards and installation capacity. JC Safety Surfacing installed the PlayBound Poured-in-Place surfacing and

Flagship Recreation’s Inc. and Landscape Structures Inc. supplied the playground equipment.
